An appointment must be scheduled to attend the VFS Global office (the company responsible for managing visa applications for Portugal) and physically submit all the documentation.
The visa processing takes approximately 60 days. Once the process is complete, VFS Global will notify you of the decision.
It’s necessary to return to the VFS Global office with the passport for the visa to be attached to it (the process of attaching the visa to the passport may take around two weeks, and the passport remains at the VFS office).
The residence visa is valid for 4 months, during which time there will be a second appointment, this time in Portugal, with AIMA (Agency for Integration, Migration, and Asylum), where much of the documentation will be submitted again and the process of converting the visa into a residence permit will begin.
The process of issuing the residence permit may take up to 90 working days, and once it is ready, it will be sent by mail to the Applicant’s address in Portugal.
Once issued, the residence permit will have an initial validity of 2 years and can be renewed for another 3 years.
After 5 years of legal residence, one can apply for permanent residence in Portugal and for Portuguese nationality.
