The NIF (Tax Identification Number) is the personal taxpayer identification number in Portugal.
The NIF (Portuguese tax number) is required for many activities such as opening a Portuguese bank account, contracting a phone subscription, and signing up for health insurance.
- To submit a request to obtaining the NIF, the following four documents are required:
- Passport Certified Copy
Copy of the page containing the personal details and signature. The copy must be certified by Notary.
- Address ProofExamples of what is accepted as proof of address:
Bank statement with the date of issue and the applicant’s name (the document must be not older than 6 months);
Utility bill for gas, electricity, water, internet, etc. linked to the property (the document must not be older than 6 months);
Lease agreement that is current and has the signatures of the landlord and the tenant;
Letter from a recognized public authority or public servant (any government issued correspondence not older than 6 months);
- Power of Attorney for Fiscal Representative
The lawyer issues a power of attorney for the specific purpose of being the applicant’s tax representative. This power of attorney must be signed by the applicant. The signature must be certified by Notary.
- Power of Attorney for Representation in the Finances
The lawyer issues a Power of Attorney for the specific purpose of obtaining the NIF. This power of attorney must be signed by the applicant. The signature must be certified by Notary.
